Today was a day for trying to rest and lay low after getting through all that driving. My ability to explore Alice Springs was sharply curtailed by the steady, driving rain we continue to have. (Some pictures of the river flooding.) I didn’t pack an ounce of rain gear for my trip into the desert, so it was pretty tough to stay dry.
I did get our rental car picked up. Driving on the left side of the road is a real trip–hopefully it will get easier, because it requires a lot of thought at the moment! Alice Springs has a lot of roundabouts as well–another adjustment for the US driver.
Today’s highlight was picking up Jim from the airport! He’s made the trip out to lend a hand where possible as we put NCT together. We had a great time catching up on our travel adventures–his flight took a bit of a detour–and getting a damp overview of the closest parts of town. We took a stroll up the Todd Mall, a main pedestrian retail area, and had some excellent meals. There was certainly no polenta to be had in Ft. Sumner! Meals are rather pricey, but some of that is an illusion: tax is included in the price, and tipping is not customary in Australia.
Tomorrow, we’ll check in at the hangar, pick up Alan and Zach from the airport, and move to our permanent digs!
